Round #15 Match Report

Round #15 Match Report

Last week we hosted the Redlegs on a typical winter's day, with a gusty wind making things tough for all.  The footballers took the honours in all four games, whilst our netballers shared the spoils 3 all; with both our U/17’s and 13’s going down by the narrowest of margins.

Despite some inaccurate kicking on goal early, the U/16’s were in control for the majority of the game, extending their margin at each break.  The young “Redlegs” forced the ball forward on plenty of occasions, but were unable to hit the scoreboard, giving us a comfortable victory in the end.  A win today should ‘lock’ away top spot and a week off in the first week of the finals.  Best players were Ryan Wilson, Nick Fox, Thomas Hamilton, Flynn Kennedy, Hunter Watson and Harvey Howe.

The first half of the 3rds was a hard-fought contest, with neither side able to get away from the other as usual in games between these sides.  Bairnsdale scored the only goal of the half, taking the margin into the break.  The second half was more of the same but opened that little bit enabling our boys to kick 4.4 to 2.4 to win by a goal.  With a surprise result in another game, they are pretty much assured of the “minor Premiership” if they don’t let their guard down.  Best named were Peter Strong, Cohen Ruyters, Liam Willaton, Isaac Copland, Dillion Thow and Jayson Musgrove.

In the “Magoo’s”, a solid win, despite some wayward kicking for goal, means a guaranteed top 3 finish.  Despite the ‘yips’, a 6 goal to 2 first half set up the victory, with Bairnsdale outscoring us in the final two terms to cut the margin to 22 points at the final siren.  Best were Jacob Van Iwaarden, Jason Garrett, Zac Gray, Ben Cheetham, Luke Phillips and Lachy Davison.

With another youngster playing his first Senior game (the 18th for the season), it was our wise “hard nuts” who lead the way.  In a repeat of last week, inaccuracy in front of goal was an issue, with us taking an 11-point lead into quarter time; but having 6 more scoring shots.  The Redlegs caught the disease in the 2nd term (1.6) where we pushed the margin out to 21 at half time.  A really solid 3rd term (3.3 to 1.2) gave us a match winning lead and despite 3 quick goals in the final term by the Redlegs, we were up by 27 at the end.  Best were Troy Forrest, Mark Collison, Michael Jacobsen, Connor Ambler, Haydn Hector and Ben Johnson.

In the Netball our “Mini Maroons” U/13’s started the day off with a thriller, just going down 26-27, with our U/15’s facing 3rd placed Bairnsdale, losing 17-36. The U/17’s was the other ‘nail biter’ of the day, with us unfortunately losing by 1 point (24-25) again.  The Senior Ladies squared the ledger for the day with the “C’s” (46-35), “B’s” (65-37) and “A’s” (58-32) all getting the job done.  Awards went to Alice Farmer, India Van Berkel, Phoebe Fothergil (U/13); Amity Blair, Sophie Little, Molly Van Berkel (U/15); Heidi Gaudion, Alannah Webster, Ella Hall (U/17); Amie Jackson, Molly Clavarino, Annie Little (C Grade); Nicole Jennings, Lori Scholtes, Cassidy Smith (B); and Rayamer Gourley, Jaimee Salleh and Kate French (A).

Last Sunday our Youth Girls headed up the highway to take on Bairnsdale and would have had an enjoyable trip home after another solid win.  Despite having plenty of the ball, the Redlegs defence held firm keeping us to 2 goals at the main break.  The 3rd term saw our midfield get on top, with the girls adding four goals to nil to eventually run out winners by 31 points.  Best Players were Molly Van Berkel, Zoe Roberts, Jorja Halsall, Matilda Van Berkel, Paris Tracey and Lami Jackson.
